Screening Wild Hazelnut Populations For High-Yielding Plants

Wisconsin lies in the heart of the range of American Hazelnut (Corylus americana) and Beaked Hazelnut (Corylus cornuta), the two native species of hazelnut.  Work began in the fall of 2009 to start screening the wild populations for plants that are out-performing their neighbors.  In other words, we are starting to look for high-yielding, disease tolerant hazelnuts for propagation and further evaluation in replicated performance trials.  This long-term project will hopefully yield improved native plants for hazelnut growers.  The two photos show the 2009 sampling sites in Douglas and Bayfield County.
